“Vanlife” takes two forms – the first one being the kind you see on Instagram; i.e. good-looking couples having given up their jobs to pursue a dreamy new life on the road. The second being the real-life, offline version. Running out of water, squabbling with a partner, tracking down bathroom facilities and sometimes spending whole days in the van just waiting for the weather to improve. These are just some of the first world problems van-lifers have to deal with in reality.
I spent three months last summer travelling around mainland Europe in my van in pursuit of fabulous diving, climbing and paragliding opportunities, which, to be honest, in the height of summer was pretty easy and all round great fun. So, I thought i’d try it again this year, but this time during the winter months.
Head far enough south (i.e. Spain) and surely the weather will be pretty good right? Well, yes, as I write this blog post, the sun is now shining but the last two days have been a far cry from an Instagram style vanlife, weather wise. To pursue this kind of adventure, one has to be realistic and accept that it’s not round the clock fun and can, from time to time, make you question what you’re doing.
However, there are so many moments that outweigh those gloomier, colder, wetter ones. Simple pleasures like having breakfast outside, amidst stunning mountainous views with vultures soaring above or pushing the door open in the morning to be greeted with the sound of crashing Atlantic waves. Huge star filled night skies and of course some of the fabulous people you meet along the way. It’s also a privilege to be able to take your home, along with all of your toys to a destination of your choosing.
As a diver, climber and paraglider pilot, packing my van for an extended trip abroad is like playing a game of Tetris – everything has it’s place. It takes time to work out what you do and don’t need when on the road. It also takes time to learn to live like a bit of a dirt bag occasionally, which is all part of the adventure as showers sometimes may be several days away!
I find that whatever activity i’ve engaged in on a particular day during a road trip, it usually falls into one of three phases of fun (a term not coined by myself I might add). “Phase one fun”, being the type of fun you can identify with right away – let’s say for example you’re on a fabulous dive with no stress and it’s immediately obvious that, hey, you’re having seriously good fun, right now!
“Phase two fun” maybe experienced while doing something relatively sketchy, perhaps a even little dangerous, but one can recognise that it’s still great fun, so long as you don’t make any mistakes while doing it.
“Phase three fun” is where the lines can be little more blurred and a fun phase I’ve encountered on several occasions while away on a van trip. This kind of fun applies when, during the days activity, you’re not actually having fun at all. Perhaps you’re struggling to keep your food down on a dive boat while the waves lash over the side in high seas. Or perhaps hiking for hours through pouring rain while freezing your knackers off. This kind of fun only turns into fun when you’re laughing about it with your pals in the bar that evening and you eventually decide, “hey, that was bloody good fun” – although in reality, at the time it really wasn’t.
So i’ll leave you with that. The sun is out now and it’s time to replenish my fresh water supply, stock up on food and see if I can find one of those three phases of fun to engage in.
